Coach Gus was born in Recife, Brazil. His swimming background is more than impressive; when he was just 12 years old he was already ranked #1 in Brazil in his age group. In 2001 Gus won the Brazilian National Championships as a member of EsporteClubePinneiros.
Gus moved to the U.S. in 2005 to swim for a club team in Roanoke, VA, for whom he also won two events at the YMCA National Championships. His swimming career continued as he joined Wingate University and became their first ever national champion when he won the 200-yard freestyle at NCAA Championships. While at Wingate, Gus earned multiple All-American Honors and won a total of 8 individual titles in several events at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships.
He began teaching swim lessons in 2005 upon his arrival in Roanoke, VA, and continued to teach swim lessons while in college. Altogether, Gus accumulates a total of 10 years of teaching and coaching under his belt. He joined Planet Swim in 2011 soon after graduating from Wingate University with a Business Management degree. Since then Gus has proven to be a great asset to our staff both teaching and coaching and plays a major role managing the daily business operations.
As our Head Age Group Coach, Gus helped several swimmers qualify to the Florida Age Group Championship (FLAGs) and to achieve AAA and AAAA time standards.
